Manchester United are ready to break the bank to sign Benfica star Goncalo Ramos.
The Mirror claim that United are willing to discuss a deal worth between £70-100 million, including add-ons, for the Portuguese striker.
If the deal is completed successfully, it will surpass United’s current transfer record of £89.3m set for Paul Pogba in August 2016.
The Red Devils are keen to bolster their attacking options with a world-class centre-forward.
The report also claims that Ramos’ arrival at Old Trafford would not deter United’s ambitions to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.
The England captain is United’s top transfer target, but the club is also ready to spend heavily on other players.
Signing Goncalo Ramos and Harry Kane together is unrealistic
Man United must be smart about their transfer business this summer.
They still owe over £300m to other clubs in transfer fee instalments and will want to avoid breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
Getting Ramos and Kane to Old Trafford in one transfer window could cost around £200-250m.
Erik ten Hag also wants United to sign a top-class midfielder and a defender.
Each of the glaring holes in the squad cannot be filled this summer, especially when the club posted financial losses this year.
United have to choose between Ramos and Kane rather than looking to sign both in one window.
Ramos has netted 24 goals across all competitions this season. He came to the limelight when he bagged a hat-trick against Switzerland in the World Cup last-16.
However, signing Kane will guarantee almost 20 goals in a season. No centre-forward in the world knows the Premier League better than the 29-year-old.
United should not allow Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy to prolong the negotiations.
The deal should be wrapped up early in the window to avoid a transfer saga.
