Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is considering the prospect of loaning out James Garner for the rest of the season amid the interest from League One side Sunderland.
The 19-year-old midfielder has been highly-regarded by the coaching staff at United but he has been limited to just six appearances for the senior squad with only three of those coming from the starting lineup.
As such, there has not been much exposure to first-team football for the club graduate and The Mail reports that Solskjaer may consider a temporary deal for the teenager before the end of the month.
The same publication adds that the Norwegian will first assess the midfield options at the club’s disposal and the decision could be dependent on United bringing in a new midfielder prior to next week’s deadline.
In the injury absence of Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba, Fred and Nemanja Matic have been the regular picks in the centre of the park under Solskjaer with Andreas Pereira acting as the occasional deputy.
Garner has not been able to break into the Premier League XI with just eight minutes of playing time and a loan exit would certainly guarantee him with regular first-team football for the rest of the campaign.
Bruno Fernandes of Sporting and Birmingham City’s Jude Bellingham are the prime midfield targets for United this month but the latter is certainly regarded as a future prospect.
The club have not reached a transfer agreement for any of those players and for the time being, Garner may have to wait and find out whether he would stay put or play for a different club from February.
