Manchester United are understood to be on the cusp of reaching an agreement to sign Mario Mandzukic from Juventus during the winter transfer window.
The 33-year-old striker was fancied to replace Romelu Lukaku at United during the summer but a deal failed to materialise before the transfer deadline passed.
Mandzukic has continued to be linked with the Red Devils in the past few months and a report from La Stampa via Metro claims that the striker is preparing for a move to Old Trafford ahead of the New Year.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been keen on recruiting a striker with experience and it appears that Mandzukic will most possibly fill the void when the transfer window reopens.
On current form, one of Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford will be guaranteed with the striker’s role but Mandzukic could prove a useful option off the bench with his aerial prowess.
Moreover, the Croatian will act as a leader within the squad and he could aide the development of the younger players such as Mason Greenwood during the short stint with the club.
United are currently seventh in the Premier League standings with 16 points and they are already nine points off the top four positions after just 12 games into the season.
Solskjaer’s side have an alternative option of qualifying for the Champions League by winning the Europa League title, but that route should not be a priority with plenty of top-flight games left to play.
