Manchester United monitoring Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes ahead of the summer transfer window

Manchester United are keen on signing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes and have been monitoring him ahead of the summer transfer window, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Red Devils could let Casemiro go in the summer following his struggles this term, and they have identified his younger compatriot as a potential replacement.

Man United want Gomes to partner academy sensation Kobbie Mainoo in a new-look midfield pairing, and he is expected to cost suitors around £40 million.

The Old Trafford club have been impressed after watching the 23-year-old in action several times in the Premier League since he joined Wolves from Flamengo in January 2023.

Gomes has also caught the attention of the Brazil national team selectors and is expected to make his international debut against England on Saturday.

He is also on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United and the Midlands club are already looking for a new midfielder as they prepare for life without him.

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil dubbed Gomes a ‘super talent’ who has been ‘very impressive’ last October following a splendid start to 2023-24 which saw him produce a top performance in a 2-1 victory against Manchester City in September.

He also weighed in with an assist in a 4-2 win over Chelsea and a brace in the 2-1 victory over Spurs last month, and Man United will be getting a really talented midfielder if they sign him.

Having won the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A and Copa Libertadores with Flamengo, Gomes has proven his quality after just 38 games in England and is ready to play for one of the big boys next season.

Man United want to strengthen their midfield after a largely underwhelming campaign this season, and the Brazilian fits the bill as Sir Jim Ratcliffe aims to oversee a squad overhaul in the coming transfer windows.
