Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has said that he is open to the prospect of signing a new contract with the Red Devils beyond the current campaign.
The Serbian made a slow beginning to the season as he struggled for regular gametime and he managed just three league appearances between August and Boxing Day.
However, he has since been a regular starter in the centre of the park alongside Fred and has benefited from the fact that both Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba are on the sidelines with injuries.
In a report covered by ESPN, the 31-year-old has stated that he has the ambition of staying put with United beyond the expiry of his deal in the summer and remains hopeful over the contract renewal.
“I’ve got a contract until the end of the season and we will see. I’m at Carrington every day open to talk if they think I can help. My first option is Manchester United but if they decide something else then there are always solutions,” he told.
United can renew the Serbian’s contract for another year with the extension clause agreed at the time of signing him from Chelsea, and they will obviously trigger the option.
Still, Matic’s future with United remains uncertain, given both McTominay and Pogba are likely to command starting roles on their comebacks and that would push him down the pecking order once again.
Matic was obviously not pleased with the lack of playing time during the first half of the season and a similar situation should see him through the exit door during the summer transfer window.
United have recently announced the signing of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting. Matic’s starting spot remains safe for the moment with the Portuguese expected to play in an attacking midfield position.
