As per The Athletic’s David Ornstein and Raphael Honigstein, Manchester United have now cooled their interest in signing Dayot Upamecano.
Upamecano, who earns £2.2million per year, was one of the top targets for the Red Devils in the summer. The 22-year-old defender has a £38 million release clause which will be active in the summer.
United could’ve gotten a highly-touted central defender at a fair price. The Athletic understands that United was one of the most credible destinations for Upamecano – however, now, Bayern Munich are the front-runners as United have decided to not pursue him further.
United are looking to strengthen their defense by signing a centre-back but it seems Upamecano is no longer a primary target.
Our take
There must be a strong reason why United have decided to not sign Upamecano anymore – after being long-term admirers. He hasn’t played particularly well in the Champions League this season. His injury record is a grave concern too.
Upamecano is a brilliant defender but United have other options. Ben White and Pau Torres are two such options who’ve been heavily linked with a move to Manchester in recent times.
