On the eve of their Premier League curtain-raiser against the South London-based side Crystal Palace, Manchester United are in danger of going into the season opener without their one of the most respected and veteran goalkeeper in Sergio Romero.
Since moving to Manchester United in July 2015 on a free transfer from Italian side Sampdoria, the 33-year-old Argentian has been an integral part of the Mancunian club.
Romero has made 61 appearances across all competitions, and most importantly, helping the club win the FA Cup, Community Sheild, and Europa League titles.
Although the Argentinian shot-stopper is hailed highly by both the fans and the club members close to him, things have changed drastically over the last few months.
Dean Henderson has returned from a two-year loan spell. He enjoyed a brilliant campaign with Sheffield United and raised the bar inside the squad. Signing a new contract extension with the club, he is here to stay.
It means time’s over for Sergio Romero at the red half of Manchester. As per a story coming out from Manchester Evening News, the Argentine international hasn’t returned yet to Carrington’s AON training complex to start training. In fact, he is the only member of the team to have trained so less.
The likes of Aston Villa, Chelsea, Leeds United and Everton were all interested in singing Romero. However, there’s been no new update and Villa and Chelsea have already got their alternatives Emiliano Martinez and Edouard Mendy in place.
It is clear that it would be poor utilization and optimization of resources to have all three- David de Gea, Henderson and Romero in the same squad. Less than three weeks are left for the market to close. Let us hope United find a buyer for him soon.
