Manchester United are looking to sign two midfielders to their ranks in the summer transfer window, according to a report from The Athletic.
United await a major overhaul this summer as they hope to shake off their struggles and challenge for the titles next season. Many sports betting sites had United as a title contender last summer but now, the betting odds don’t even favour us for a top-four spot for next season. This summer will be crucial in changing those odds and perceptions.
Finding a permanent manager turns out to be a priority, with Ralf Ragnick’s interim reign ending this summer.
The Red Devils have reportedly held talks with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag about a potential takeover, while Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique and Julen Lopetugui are also on their wishlist.
In addition, United are keen to reinforce the midfield with an offensive-minded and a defensive-minded player as Paul Pogba’s contract expires this summer.
The French midfielder seems to have no intentions to sign an extension and could leave Old Trafford on a free transfer.
Besides, Nemanja Matic, who has a contract until the end of the next season, has largely struggled this season, and he couldn’t be relied on in the long run.
United have been linked with a host of midfielders in recent times, including Aurelien Tchouameni, Amadou Haidara, Ruben Neves and Fabian Ruiz.
Tchouameni has established himself as one of the best young midfielders in Europe after consistently impressing at AS Monaco. However, as reported by FootMercato, United would have to pay around €50 million for his services, and there is also strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
Haidara is an exciting prospect from Leipzig, and he is Rangnick’s preferred target as they have previously worked together at the Saxony-based club.
The 24-year-old is likely to cost cheaper than Tchouameni, but it remains to be seen whether he would bed in at United quickly.
Napoli’s Fabian Ruiz is arguably the best option available, and signing him would be a great piece of business for the Red Devils.
The 25-year-old is among the best midfielders in Serie A, while his progress is also on an upward spiral.
United are also interested in buying a new right-winger due to the uncertainty on the futures of Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.
The striker options would also be depleted with the potential departures of Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo, as the former will be out of contract this summer whilst the latter is unlikely to continue if United fail to finish in the top four of the table.
