Manchester United are growingly confident of landing the signature of Moussa Dembele from Lyon during the next transfer window, a report from The Star claims.
Dembele has been linked with a move to Old Trafford over the past few years and a report earlier this month claimed that the striker is open to the prospect of joining the club.
It is now revealed that the Frenchman has been closely monitored by United on a number of occasions this term and they are favourites to secure his services from Les Gones.
Premier League rivals Chelsea have also been credited with an interest but the former Celtic man is said to be desperate to make the move to Old Trafford when the transfer window reopens.
Since the departure of Romelu Lukaku last summer, Anthony Martial has mostly featured as the main striker for the club and he has found reliable success with 16 goals from 34 outings.
Still, there is the need for competition in the position, given Martial has the tendency to drop deeper in the search for ball possession rather than occupying the traditional striker’s role.
Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have also played upfront this term but the former definitely appears comfortable on the left wing, where he has the chance to run at the opposition defence.
Greenwood, meanwhile, remains at the early phase of his professional career while January signing Odion Ighalo, who has bagged four goals in eight games, has yet to start a league game under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Hence, United should move for a new centre-forward and Dembele, who has a cool, clinical head in front of goal appears the ideal fit for the club.
The 23-year-old striker has featured in the striker’s position throughout his career and he would suit United’s counter-attacking style of play with his ability to take advantage of through balls.
Dembele, who previously played for Fulham in England, has netted 22 goals from 42 appearances across all competitions for Les Gones this term.
He is currently valued at around £60m but could be signed for a lesser fee with Lyon dealing with financial difficulties after the abrupt end to the Ligue 1 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
