Manchester United are in danger of not progressing to the knockout rounds of the Champions League this season after losing 3-1 to Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.
Although United are at the top of Group H with nine points from five matches at the moment, if they lose to RB Leipzig away from home in Germany next week and PSG win against Istanbul Basaksehir, then they will drop to the Europa League.
PSG and Leipzig are second and third respectively in the group with nine points each, and for United to book their place in the last-16 stage, they have to avoid defeat on Matchday 6.
First-half goals at Old Trafford
Neymar put PSG as early as the sixth minute, but Marcus Rashford restored parity for the home team on 32 minutes.
Kaylor Navas had initially pushed away an effort from Anthony Martial, but Rashfort’s shot wrong-footed the PSG goalkeeper and went in.
Early chances for Manchester United in second half
Martial had a great chance to put the former Premier League champions in the lead in the opening minutes of the second half, but the French forward could not keep his effort on target in front of an open goal.
Edinson Cavani then saw his chip come back off the crossbar, and Martial could not finish off the rebound.
PSG surge ahead
That gave the initiative to PSG, who put themselves back in the lead in the 69th minute when former United midfielder Ander Herrera’s shot was turned into Marquinos’s path.
A minute later Fred was sent off for the home team. The midfielder was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Herrera, and United went down to 10 men.
Then in the first minute of injury time, Brazilian forward Neymar doubled his tally and secured all three points from the match for PSG with the team’s third goal.
