Manchester United are understood to have identified Schalke 04’s Rabbi Matondo as an alternative target, should they miss out on signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
The 19-year-old, who has three Wales caps to his name, spent the nearly three years in the Manchester City academy before he made the move to Gelsenkirchen for around £11.3m in January 2019.
Matondo has since made 21 appearances for the German outfit where he has registered the solitary goal, and he appears to have caught the eye with his ability to play anywhere in the attack including the striker’s position.
According to Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils have been closely monitoring the Liverpool-born teenager and they could make an effort to sign him, suppose Dortmund price them out of a move for Sancho.
It is added that the Welshman is regarded as a ‘low-risk buy’ similarly to Daniel James, who made the surprise move from Swansea City during the 2019 summer transfer window.
United have been heavily linked with Sancho’s services this summer but they are currently facing a major stumbling block with Dortmund reluctant to lower their £87m price tag.
As a result, it has been suggested that they could delay their pursuit of the England international for another 12 months and that could see them move for Matondo’s signature.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had a particular preference of signing young British players and the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and James have already made their mark with the team this season.
So far, the Norwegian has got his signings right in the transfer market and it remains to be seen whether the hierarchy will make a formal approach to land Matondo from Schalke.
The teenager could feature for Schalke in tomorrow’s Revierderby against Dortmund. While Sancho remains the main piece of attraction, some United fans would surely keep an eye on Matondo, suppose he plays.
