Manchester United have discussed signing Marcos Alonso after he left Barcelona as a free agent

Manchester United remain in hunt for a back-up left-back capable of playing on the left side of central defence this summer, and they have held discussions about Marcos Alonso, according to The Athletic.

The 33-year-old is a free agent after leaving Barcelona at the end of the 2023-24 campaign, and he remains a concrete option for the Red Devils amid regular links to him over the past few months.

Luke Shaw missed pre-season having been given an extended break as a result of his participation at the 2024 European Championship, while Tyrell Malacia is yet to return to full fitness after missing the whole of last term due to injury.

Man United manager Erik ten Hag deployed Argentina international Lisandro Martinez at left-back against Manchester City on Saturday due to the club’s defensive issues.

While the former Ajax star did not struggle in the position, he looked much more comfortable when shifted inside to his typical position in the second half.

Alonso has proven himself capable of playing on the left side of central defence despite primarily being a left-back, earning praises from former Barca manager Xavi as a result.

“His performances have been really good – he’s adapted very well to the centre-back position,” Xavi said after a game against Real Madrid last year.

“He’s winning aerial duels and covers his space well. He is quick for a player of his stature, and he helps us in the build-up. I am very happy to have Marcos on the team, he’s been a spectacular signing.”

Alonso also brings plenty of Premier League experience to the table having spent nine years in the English top-flight playing for Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland and Chelsea.

He ended his time in England with 26 goals and 17 assists in 179 Premier League appearances, winning the title in 2016-17 and making the PFA Team of the Year the following season.

Man United could do with such a quality option on the bench, and signing him for free would be a steal.
