As the story suggests, Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward prioritized the moves for Varane and Marco Verratti in the summer of 2018. However, Jose Mourinho’s concerns over their availability saw United putting their interest in someone else.

And hence, the defender was close yet far from securing a deal for the Mancunian club.

But with two years gone since then, the Red Devils have a chance to strike a deal the World Cup-winning center-half, as per Samuel Luckhurst.

Varane is a boyhood United fan whose hero was Rio Ferdinand. Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign him in 2011 but ended up signing Phil Jones instead, with Varane moving to Madrid. Varane is represented by Base Soccer Agency – an agency United have a productive relationship with.

Our take

It’s hard to think that Real Madrid will sell Varane and henceforth, this deal is highly unlikely to take place. His contract expires in 2022. There’s no talk of the transfer fee but if Varane is available, United should try to sign him at all costs.

Signed from French club Lens in 2011, Varane has had made over 300 appearances for Los Blancos so far. A man of such experience who help United establish a strong defense.

United are also in the race to sign Dayot Upamecano who has a €45m release clause that could be activated next summer.
