Manchester United handed double fitness boost ahead of Tottenham Hotspur clash

Manchester United have been handed a double fitness boost ahead of their Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur today.

The Red Devils recently suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford. They have picked up just one point from four matches.

United are already eight points adrift of leaders Chelsea and can’t afford to lose further ground if they want to challenge for the title.

Ahead of today’s game, Solskjaer has confirmed a double fitness boost with Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial in contention to face Spurs.

Both players returned to training earlier last week after injuries. Solskjaer has revealed that he has a fully-fit squad to choose from.

Paul Pogba remains the only absentee for the encounter as he will be serving a three-game domestic ban for his sending off last weekend.

He told Manutd.com: “Of course, Paul is suspended but apart from that it’s a fully fit squad.

“It is a very strange position to be in, to have 25 outfield players and five keepers training. Thirty men training this week, all fit.”

Varane and Harry Maguire have been the first-choice central defensive pairing for United, but they have not played together since the back end of September.

Maguire missed a couple of games before the international break with a calf problem.

His return to the starting XI this month coincided with Varane spending time on the sidelines with a groin issue.

The duo are widely expected to play together against Spurs. Maguire’s form has been questionable this term. The England captain has been found out positionally on numerous occasions.

Victor Lindelof has been the better performing centre-back compared to Maguire, but it appears unlikely that Solskjaer will drop the club captain to play the Sweden international.

The return of Martial is also a boost for the Red Devils. The Frenchman has had a tough year in the United shirt, but he could provide the X-Factor off the bench with his pace and dribbling skills.

His finishing has not been up to scratch in recent times, but the forward has big-game experience.

Solskjaer could spring up a surprise by starting the 25-year-old this afternoon.
