Manchester United handed a major boost with Xavi’s golden boys ruled out of second leg clash at Old Trafford

Manchester United have received a huge boost to their hopes of progressing in the Europa League as Barcelona will be without Gavi and Pedri for the second leg.

The two sides treated fans to a classic high-intensity clash which ended 2-2 at Spotify Camp Nou last night.

The Spanish giants visit Old Trafford next week to face United in the return fixture of this Europa League play-off.

They will be hoping to beat United at the Theatre of Dreams which has been done only twice all season.

Their hopes of achieving the feat have become even tougher as they will be without two key players.

Gavi was previously booked against Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League and needed to avoid a yellow card against United.

However, he received his third booking in Europe when he held Fred’s shirt to obstruct United’s counter-attack.

Barcelona also confirmed that Pedri suffered a thigh injury in the first half and will undergo tests to determine the severity.

Both players have played a crucial role in Barcelona’s resurgence this season. It will be a major headache for Barca manager Xavi if Pedri is declared unfit for next week’s clash.

Sergio Busquets also missed the game through injury but may return for the second leg.

Gavi’s absence is a big blow, with his work rate in midfield crucial to Barca’s style of play.
