Former Manchester United manager David Moyes made a shocking claim – revealing that he went on to arrange a helicopter to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.
After Sir Alex Ferguson departed Manchester United, another Scot, Moyes was given the chance to succeed the 13-time Premier League-winning manager’s duty at Old Trafford.
However, having just won Community Shield, Moyes saw himself getting the sack following a torrid run of results in his first season at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
The 57-year-old is now the manager of London-based club West Ham United.
And ahead of the weekend’s Premier League’s clash against Gareth Bale’s Tottenham Hotspur, Moyes admitted:
“I wanted Gareth Bale to be my first signing at Manchester United. But it was already down the road a bit with Real Madrid. I tried to hijack it. I tried to get him
“Manchester United offered more money than Real Madrid. They offered more money to the player.
“We did everything we could to try and get the player. We even had a helicopter at the training ground to take him and bring him back. We thought we had a chance.
“But he chose Real Madrid and he made a brilliant decision because he went on to win four Champions Leagues. He’s had a brilliant career.”
Gareth Bale, who decided to join Madrid for a then-world record £85m, returned to Spurs in the last summer transfer window.
He is now on a one-year from Los Blancos, plying his trades for his former club.
Should the spell go well for the Welshman, he might end up staying with the Lilywhites on a permanent basis.
