Manchester United gets 22nd penalty of the season

Manchester United have had a great run inside the opponent’s box. They got awarded their 22nd penalty of the long season against Sevilla in the Europa League semi-final.

The first goal started with a one-two between Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. Martial picks Rashford making a run into the box and as Rashford looks to shoot, Sevilla defender Diego Carlos makes an untimed lunge rewarding the Red Devils with a penalty. Bruno Fernandes, as usual, slotted it home.

Seven of the 22 came after the lockdown. Fernandes has been the top beneficiary this season. He’s scord eight out of 12 goals from penalties. Fernandes is also the top scorer of the Europa League this season putting eight behind the net.

The Reds previously broke the record for most penalties awarded in a Premier League season (14) and are now on their way to establish the same stat in Europe.

The question is how do United keep winning so many penalties and will they keep doing it?

As ineffective VAR is at times, it is impossible for United to get away with wrong calls. United deserve the penalties they are getting. United’s front line is quick, gets into dangerous areas with light-footed movement inside the box. They lure defenders to make a challenge and get an advantage early on. No dives. No poor calls by referees.
