Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood has been impressing on loan in La Liga for Getafe, with three goals and four assists to his name in 14 league appearances.
The 22-year-old is attracting attention from Barcelona and would have been keen to start 2024 with a bang.
However, his ambitions have been dealt a temporary blow after he was sent off in his first game of the year today.
Greenwood was shown a straight red card as Getafe were reduced to nine men in their league game against Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday evening.
The Man United academy graduate was sent off for dissent and the referee clearly heard the foul and abusive language the frustrated Englishman directed towards him.
Greenwood will now miss the next three games as a result of his sending-off, which will not do his chances of impressing suitors any good.
It is the first time the Red Devils star will be sent off in his professional career, and it appears the frustration of playing with a man down while losing 2-0 got to him.
To make matters worse, the Man United loanee could face an extra ban of up to four games after making the crazy sign at the referee before leaving the pitch.
Missing those games could affect Greenwood’s chances of securing a dream move to one of the big clubs in the summer.
Barca have been scouting him in the games before the Christmas break, and he impressed against Atletico Madrid last time out, but his latest action will not have done him any good.
Valencia and Real Sociedad are also keeping tabs on him, but Getafe want to sign him permanently and have included a 20% sell-on clause in his deal.
Greenwood has already played his last game for Man United from all indications, and it will be intriguing to see where he ends up plying his trade next season.
