Manchester United have suffered a key injury blow with midfielder Scott McTominay likely to be out of action for the next two months following a knee ligament damage.
The Scotland international suffered the setback from a challenge on Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff within 30 seconds of the Boxing Day Premier League clash.
He was able to last for the entire half prior to his substitution and following that game, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer acknowledged that the midfielder may have damaged his knee ligaments.
United were initially hoping that the 23-year-old could return to action during the backend of January, but The Mail claims that the club graduate could be sidelined for a lengthier period of time.
It is added that the midfielder’s injury is more significant than initially predicted and scans have confirmed that he could be out of first-team action for around eight weeks.
McTominay has undoubtedly been the best performing player in the centre of the park for the club this term and he has managed more tackles, interceptions and clearances than any other United midfielder in the league.
The return of Paul Pogba should lessen the blow of his absence but the Frenchman has yet to make the starting lineup with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer apparently concerned over his fitness after a three-month injury lay-off.
Nemanja Matic, Fred and Andreas Pereira are the only recognised senior midfielders available for the Arsenal clash on New Year’s Day. Pogba could miss the game after not travelling with the squad to London on Tuesday.
