Manchester United have reportedly joined a long list of European clubs, who are looking to sign Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig during the next transfer window.
According to Sky Sports News, the Red Devils have entered the pursuit of the France international whose contract with Leipzig expires at the end of next season.
The same publication claims that they may have to compete with a number of elite clubs including Manchester City and Bayern Munich for the centre-back, who has a £52.5m (€60m) release clause on his contract.
The Red Devils are more than likely to reinforce the squad during the summer and the priority appears on signing a right-sided winger and a versatile central midfielder.
However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may not pass up the opportunity of landing Upamecano, who is widely regarded as one of the best young defenders in European football at the moment.
At the age of 21, Upamecano perfectly fits into the manager’s requirements for young players with immense potential and the club should be able to afford the £52.5m package for his services.
Still, the Frenchman would want assurances of a regular starting berth and Champions League football could remain another defining factor in him choosing his next club.
Solskjaer has stuck with Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire as his regular choices in the central defence this term and the duo have kept regular clean sheets during the backend of the campaign.
Lindelof’s performances were questionable during the initial stages of the season but over the past few months, he has impressed with his positioning alongside the England international.
Yet, there is the possibility of Upamecano being guaranteed the starting spot next term, suppose Solskjaer opts for the 3-4-1-2 formation, which has worked to good effect against the big sides.
