As per Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot will fly to Italy to join AC Milan today. The deal is structured as a classic loan deal – without any option to buy.
Milan didn’t insert an option for a permanent deal because United demanded a €30m fee – which is too high considering how little Dalot has proven his mettle. Milan made a quick move as Roma were interested in Dalot too.
Dalot arrived in 2018 under Jose Mourinho. His debut season was decent but not appalling for the new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Ole couldn’t trust Dalot and bought Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
It could be a major disappointment for a young player like Dalot to not have his manger’s confidence in him.
Things took a sharp turn after he was sidelined last season.
Dalot started the last game against Brighton but didn’t stand out. He whipped in good amount of quality crosses into the box – but didn’t make any impact.
United no longer have an Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Romelu Lukaku to take advantage of his crosses.
Our take
This is a shrewd move by Manchester United. In difficult times where United are unable to make any progress, offloading unimportant players is a good strategy. Alexis Sanchez left the club in August. The recent to depart was Andreas Pereira and Chris Smalling is expected to leave the club too.
Dalot is better off at Milan – a club headed by ex-football players and those who understand what it takes to make progress. The Italian club are in the Europa League – which guarantees a lot of opportunities for Dalot.
The likes of Ibrahimovic and Ante Revic will make the most out of Dalot’s crossing abilities too.
United could make profit out of Dalot’s move to. If things go well for him at Milan, United could demand a decent fee for him or incorporate him into the squad as Wan-Bissaka’s deputy.
