In conversation with Christian Falk on Stretford Paddock YouTube channel, the German transfer journalist revealed that Manchester United could sign Dayot Upamecano next summer only if they approach RB Leipzig quickly.
Earlier this season, there were positive reports that United could sign the French center-back.
United desperately need a center-back. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign a defender. The Norwegian boss wants competition amongst Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof.
Chris Smalling is set to move to AS Roma too. Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are hardly competent to make OGS’ XI.
Upamecano spoke about his future earlier in the transfer window:
“I have extended my contract with Leipzig,” Upamecano said, via a report on Goal. “I am targeted by several clubs, I speak with clubs, but I have time. We will see what happens in the future.”
The French center-back signed a new deal with Leipzig earlier this year with a €42m release clause which will be active from next summer. The new contract will expire in 2023.
Upamecano is a brilliant center-back and his value will only grow from here. However, looking at United’s lazy approach to every transfer target, its safe to say the Red Devils will face competition to sign the Frenchman.
