Manchester United have made a last-ditch effort to extend the contract of Angel Gomes, a report from Evening Standard claims.
The 19-year-old has been a quality performer for the youth teams at United but he has yet to become a regular with the senior squad under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Over the course of the current season, Gomes has been restricted to six appearances across all competitions and out of those, he has earned less than 300 minutes of first-team football.
As a result, he has been reluctant to put pen-to-paper on a new contract beyond June 30 but Evening Standard claims that the club are ‘still trying to convince’ him to prolong his stay.
Solskjaer has placed the emphasis on the progress of young academy players and the likes of Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood have been heavily involved this term.
Before the above-mentioned duo, Gomes and Tahith Chong were fancied to make their mark with the first-team squad but so far, that has clearly not been the case.
Despite the limited playing time, Chong committed his future to the club on a two-year contract in March but Gomes has yet to follow suit and could become a free-agent in July.
Earlier last month, Gomes said that he wants to go on and win trophies with the Red Devils and it remains to be seen whether the board can make a breakthrough in the contract negotiations.
