Manchester United’s pursuit of Porto left-back Alex Telles, has taken a big hit.
United have a new competitor for the defender’s signature in the form of French champions Paris Saint Germain.
According to a report by TeamTalk, Paris Saint Germain are entering the race to sign Telles. PSG’s decision is driven due to a lack of availability of players.
The French side are already going through an injury and health crisis. This has compounded by three of their players getting suspensions for non-parliamentary behavior at the end of the match against Marseille.
As such, O Jogo (via Sport Witness) claims that PSG boss Thomas Tuchel is “urgently” keen to resolve the crisis. They also state that the French club have a “strong chance” at signing Telles.
This is a disaster in the making for Manchester United.
United’s failure to sign Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid makes the move for Telles a necessity for the club. Alex Telles is expected to be the favourite for United’s left-back spot, following Luke Shaw’s injury problems and Brandon Williams’s inexperience.
United have already held talks with Telles’ agent Pihir Zahavi. Earlier this summer, Zahavi came to London to discuss a potential move for Telles to United.
Porto are prepared to sell the 27-year-old before the transfer window shuts on 5 October. Telles has less than a year left on his current deal. He is expected to cost £18m.
United’s transfer window has been terrible until now. The club have only signed Donny Van de Beek from Ajax and have lost out on a long list of targets.
OGS’s only hope of saving this disastrous summer was a successful move for Alex Telles. United need to devise a foolproof strategy or start praying for a miracle to compete with PSG’s financial bulldozing machine.
