Manchester United could be set to sign wrong Chelsea player, £20m Blues ace far superior

Manchester United should be trying to sign Ian Maatsen rather than Marc Cucurella from Chelsea this summer.

United have already submitted an offer to sign Chelsea left-back Cucurella on a season-long loan.

Erik ten Hag is in desperate need of a new left-back after the injuries sustained by Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

The Blues signed the 25-year-old from Brighton last summer for a whopping £63 million (ESPN). However, the Spaniard has struggled to impress at Stamford Bridge.

Cucurella is clearly very good going forward, but he is poor defensively. His form for Chelsea could be confidence-related.

However, he may be given a chance to rediscover his best form at Old Trafford.

Marc Cucurella is the wrong full-back target for Manchester United

Ten Hag should be going all out to sign Maatsen from Chelsea, instead of the former Brighton man.

The 21-year-old is available for just £20 million this summer, according to The Athletic. That would represent excellent long-term value for United.

Maatsen is absolutely rapid and has the ability to get up and down the left-hand flank for the entirety of the 90 minutes.

He is a far better defender than Cucurella and his delivery into the box is also superior to the Spaniard’.

The Chelsea youngster is a progressive passer – something that Ten Hag likes and desperately needs more of in his team right now.

The opposite can be said about Cucrella who, because of his lack of confidence, seems to always turn back and pass the ball either to his defenders or the deep-lying central midfielder.

The problem here may well be that United don’t have the £20m needed to sign Maatsen. So how about a season-long loan with an obligation to buy him next summer?

Chelsea may be resistant to sell Maatsen to Man United. They’re clearly happy to allow Cucurella to move to Old Trafford though, and that tells a story in itself.

Ten Hag would be better served in going all out for Maatsen this summer.
