Manchester United are reportedly considering the possibility of signing Edinson Cavani from Paris Saint-Germain before the transfer deadline next week, a report from The Telegraph claims.
The Red Devils parted ways with Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez (on loan) to Inter Milan last summer without pursuing a replacement and that has certainly limited the options in the forward department.
The club are now expected to be without Marcus Rashford for at least two months after a double stress fracture in his back and that is likely to tempt the board to strengthen the frontline before Thursday’s 11 pm deadline.
According to The Telegraph, United have their sights on a possible deal for Cavani from the French champions but they are yet to make a formal approach for the Uruguay international.
While the striker has the widespread experience and a good record in front of goal, the club seem concerned over his £360,000-a-week wages after tax, particularly with him approaching the final phase of his career.
Cavani will celebrate his 33rd birthday next month and the club’s hierarchy appear worried over a possible repeat of the Alexis Sanchez situation, where the Chilean looked out of sorts playing for the club.
Cavani, who is currently valued at £12.6m, has bagged more than 20 league goals in each of his previous nine seasons. He has, however, struggled this term with just five goals from 14 appearances.
The ex-Napoli man has recently had limited first-team football due to form and injury concerns and he would certainly be a gamble purchase for United with the wages and transfer fees involved.
Preferably, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s would propose a loan move for the Uruguayan but that possibility seems unlikely with Les Parisiens keen on the striker’s sale with his contract expiring at the end of June.
United presently have only Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood as the realistic options to play in the centre-forward position. The duo have scored a combined two goals since the turn of the year.
