Manchester United confirm loan exit of 23-year-old goalkeeper

Manchester United have confirmed the departure of goalkeeper Joel Pereira on a temporary basis to Hearts for the entire 2019/2020 season. The Portuguese has barely featured for the Red Devils since graduating through the youth system and he has now been handed with the chance to secure regular first-team football in the Scottish Premiership.

At present, David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Lee Grant are in front of him in the pecking order for the shot-stopper duties and that makes sense for the 23-year-old to join a side where he can progress with regular minutes. Aside from Pereira, Dean Henderson is another promising goalkeeper, who has been loaned out to Sheffield United for the second-straight season after helping them secure promotion to the Premier League.

The England youth international has certainly made the better impact which has seen him rewarded with a new contract as well as a maiden stint in the Premier League, and it will be interesting to see whether Pereira can make the opportunity count with Hearts in order to earn more exposure in the English top-flight.

De Gea has been widely touted to pen a new contract extension with United this summer but so far, there has been no announcement regarding the same from the club. In the worst case scenario, the Spaniard may leave the club on a free next summer and that could possibly pave the way for one of Henderson or Pereira to compete for the number one role, should manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prefer a younger option to Romero.
