Manchester United have revealed that Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from international duty with the England Under-21s after suffering a back problem during the 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Sunday.
The teenager has already impressed with a couple of goals in the Cup competitions this term but he has largely been restricted to a cameo role in the Premier League with Marcus Rashford regularly leading the line.
Against the Magpies, Greenwood was brought on to replace Juan Mata in the 66th minute but he eventually ended up on the losing side with Matthew Longstaff scoring the winner on his league debut for the hosts.
It has now been confirmed that Greenwood picked up a knock during the Premier League meeting, thereby forcing him to withdraw from Adrian Boothroyd’s squad for the Under-21 qualifier against Austria.
“Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has been forced to withdraw from the England Under-21 squad. He will remain at the Aon Training Complex in advance of the Reds’ next outing, against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday 20 October,” a statement on the club’s official website read.
Apart from Greenwood, the likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard, Diogo Dalot, Eric Bailly, and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are unavailable for first-team action at the moment.
However, the first five mentioned are likely to return in time for the crunch Premier League clash against Liverpool after the international break and that should hopefully improve the performances, which have been poor of late.
The attacking displays have been a genuine concern with just five goals from the past seven league appearances. Marcus Rashford has struggled to score from open play since the curtain-raiser and the return of Martial should provide Solskjaer with a much effective option upfront.
