Manchester United have confirmed that Marcos Rojo has been permitted to re-join former club Estudiantes on loan for the rest of the ongoing campaign.
Rojo was widely expected to seal the temporary deal earlier in the month and the Red Devils have now officially confirmed that he will make the return to the club, where he began his professional career.
“Manchester United has reached an agreement with Estudiantes for the loan of Marcos Rojo, pending international clearance,” a statement read on the club’s official website.
The 29-year-old has struggled with injury concerns over the past few years and this season has been no different as he managed just nine appearances for United during the first half of the campaign.
Obviously, his gametime had been reduced after the summer arrival of Harry Maguire for the central defensive role while the emergence of Brandon Williams likewise increased the competition for the left-back spot.
Rojo has now made the return to Argentina with Estudiantes where he is expected to link up with former international teammate Javier Mascherano and ex-United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron, who is the chairman.
The versatile defender will have 12 months remaining on his United contract when he returns from the loan stint but the Red Devils have the option of triggering a clause to extend his stay for another year.
United will definitely seek to sanction the defender’s sale on a permanent basis during the summer transfer window. The Argentine may not be the only player heading for the exit door with Jesse Lingard’s place also in doubt.
