The transfer saga of Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara is entering its final stage. The race for the Spanish midfielder’s signature had drawn up battle lines in two major European leagues and spanned three footballing giants.
Thiago’s wish to seek a new footballing challenge captured Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Liverpool, and Manchester United in a classic spider’s web.
Front-runners Liverpool’s reluctance to spend €30m on a player the club think they can sign for free in January has given hope to Manchester United.
United’s other rivals Barcelona have preferred to focus their attention towards Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijaldum.
New Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman managed Wijnaldum at the Dutch national team and prefers him to Thiago. However, the board wants to bring back the Spaniard to Camp Nou
The prospects of Thiago to United were further explained by ESPN journalist Mark Ogden in the podcast Gab and Jules.
He stated: “Man United can afford the asking price of €30m for Thiago Alcântara set by Bayern. But the club is reluctant to meet the player’s wage demands, which are more than £200,000-a-week”.
He also said that United are ready to shelve the deal unless Thiago is prepared to accept less than his current wages at the German club.
Its clear- Thiago will have to lower his wage demands to join the Red Devils.
Manchester United have already signed midfielder Donny Van De Beek from Ajax this summer. The addition of a player of Thiago’s caliber is exciting for the club, but there is cause for concern as well.
Thiago’s injury record does not bode well for a team like the Red Devils. The club has already suffered extensively due to an injury crisis last season and would be hoping to avoid such a situation in the future.
The summer transfer window is coming to a close in less than a month. The club has to act quickly if they want to bring the world-class midfielder to the Old Trafford for next season.
