After missing out on Dortmund’s so called ‘deadline’ to sign Sancho this Monday morning, Manchester United is looking for options on the flank. At 29 years of age, Douglas Costa will be an apt choice for an ephemeral but impactful sojourn at Old Trafford.
The Brazilian winger fell short of impressing the former boss, Maurizio Sarri, making just seven league starts for Juventus while they retained their Scudetto title.
Costa joined Juventus from Bayern Munich in 2017 on an initial loan deal, before completing a £32m move from the German side a year later. Since his joining, he has been able to score just the six goals and add sixteen assists to his tally in the league.
His run for the Bavarian champions was a slightly better affair, scoring 14 goals in 77 appearances after completing a £22m transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk.
After the announcement of Andrea Pirlo as Juventus’ new manager last week, the Italian champions are planning to resuscitate the squad as a consequence of an early exit from the Champions league.
According to Tuttosport, Costa is part of a five-player list that Juventus and new manager Pirlo are looking to cash in on. Alongside Costa, the list includes some other big names as well. Blaise Matuidi has been linked with a move to David Beckham’s MLS franchise Inter Miami, and Khedira’s contract is set to be terminated by mutual consent. Paulo Dybala is up for sale too.
The Brazilian international will add pace and finesse to the United flank. It is no secret that Costa still remains to be one of the finest dribblers across Europe and his flair will help United break deep deadlocks in defence next season.
If the Red Devils submit an offer to Juventus in the coming weeks, given their interest in cashing in on him, they are bound to sell him off to United at a fraction of what he’s worth.
