Manchester United ahead of Liverpool and Real Madrid in race for Enzo Fernandez

Manchester United are ahead of Liverpool and Real Madrid in the race for Enzo Fernandez, according to Gaston Edul on TyC Sports

The player’s agent has travelled to Portugal to discuss personal terms in case his release clause is triggered.

Fernandez was spectacular for Argentina at the 2022 World Cup. He played in all seven matches, contributing a goal and an assist, as his country won the coveted trophy in Qatar.

The midfielder has also started 13 matches for Benfica in the Primeira Liga this season, netting a goal and contributing three assists.

His outstanding performances have sparked attention from some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Liverpool, Madrid and Chelsea.

United must act quickly

United were heavily linked with a move for Cody Gakpo, with Erik ten Hag said to be a huge admirer of his countryman.

However, Liverpool stole a march on them and agreed a transfer fee between €40-50 million for the highly talented forward.

That was a fee United wouldn’t have any problem paying for Gakpo. However, they were outpaced by their rivals.

Fernandez is another player on the radar of the Merseyside giants. On that basis, the Red Devils must act quickly to secure a deal.

The Argentina international is a central midfielder who is highly rated for his passing, tackling and key passes.

The 21-year-old averaged an incredible 3.1 tackles and 1.0 clearances per game in the World Cup.

He also boasted over 87 percent passing accuracy and 2.3 long balls (as per Whoscored).
