Manchester United have initiated talks to sign former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu for free next summer, according to Christian Falk.
United added two creative midfielders in their last two transfer windows — Bruno Fernandes in January and Donny Van de Beek last summer.
United have other options too. Andreas Pereira was sent out on loan to Lazio but its clear that he’s not going to make a mark in Ole’s XI.
Jesse Lingard is another option struggling to obtain minutes He might leave for free next summer as his contract ends in June 2021.
Just like Lingard, Juan Mata‘s contract with United will come to an end next summer. Although they have an option to extend it until 2022 and Mata’s resurgence might trigger the extension.
As reported by Falk, Calhanoglu will be able to agree on a pre-contract with Manchester United next January. The claims further insist that Manchester United have been in talks since last summer.
Calhanoglu rejected an offer from Juventus in the summer.
Our take
Calhanoglu is definitely a step up from the likes of Pereira and Lingard but United already have Van de Beek in their ranks. Solskaer should focus on adding Nemanja Matic’s replacement as the Serbian midfielder’s gas is going to run out.
