Manchester United academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo is now very close to signing a new contract

Manchester United academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo is now close to signing a new contract, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Talks to hand the England international midfielder an improved deal have been ongoing for a while, and an agreement is now close between both parties.

Mainoo is currently the lowest-paid first-team player at the club on the £20,000-per-week deal he signed in February 2023.

However, while the performance-related bonuses in his current contract have been triggered, Mainoo is set to receive a deserved wage increase when he signs his new deal.

Man United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has decided that the 19-year-old, dubbed ‘exceptional’ by former England manager Gareth Southgate, is one of those that are strictly off limits to would-be suitors.

The Red Devils want to build a team capable of winning major trophies around him, and he is an essential part of their long-term project under the British billionaire.

He deserves to be among the top ten highest earners at Man United, and an official announcement to confirm his new deal is expected before the end of the season.

The Red Devils have started the season woefully, with just three victories in 11 games, but Mainoo has been one of their top performers.

Ten Hag will hope others can emulate him and step up when the Premier League resumes after the October international break.
