Manchester United 2-1 Fulham: Three talking points as Erik ten Hag’s men finish Premier League season on a high

Manchester United defeated Fulham 2-1 to secure a third-place finish in the Premier League today.

Erik ten Hag made six changes to his side with one eye on next weekend’s FA Cup final clash with Manchester City.

Harry Maguire, Fred, Alejandro Garnacho, Diogo Dalot, Marcus Rashford and Tyrell Malacia came into the starting XI.

The Red Devils conceded a sloppy goal from a corner inside 20 minutes. Matters could have been worse for the home side when Casemiro gave away a penalty to Fulham.

David De Gea stepped up to pull off a brilliant save to deny Aleksandar Mitrovic from the spot.

Jadon Sancho scored one of the easiest tap-ins to ensure Fulham did not go into half-time with an advantage.

Bruno Fernandes completed the comeback for United in the second half by chipping the ball over Bernd Leno.

Here are our three talking points from the final Premier League game of the season.

David De Gea’s massive penalty save

De Gea and penalties are not a great combination. He is a world-class shot-stopper but consistently fails to deliver when it comes to thwarting penalties.

Fulham scored an early goal and could have gone 2-0 up in the first half. However, the Spaniard guessed right to make a great save.

His reaction after making the save said it all. He rose to his feet and then booted the ball into the crowd.

Erik ten Hag delivers in his debut Premier League season

The Dutchman saw the campaign start in the worst possible manner.

Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford ripped United apart in the first two games. Questions were raised about whether Man United made the right call by hiring Ten Hag rather than Mauricio Pochettino.

The turnaround since then has been sensational. United have hit a few bumps this season, but that is expected from a side in transition.

Qualifying for the Champions League demonstrates that Ten Hag has United heading in the right direction.

All eyes are on the first-ever all-Manchester FA Cup final

United will face Man City in the FA Cup final in six days. They will be keen to derail City’s treble bid.

The Red Devils have already won the Carabao Cup this term. Winning another trophy would cap off a brilliant season.

However, Pep Guardiola’s men tore Real Madrid apart in the Champions League semi-final and would love to beat their arch-rivals to claim their second trophy of the season.
