Manchester United crashed out of Europe after losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich in their final Champions League group game this evening.
Erik ten Hag’s side came into the contest knowing they needed maximum points to have any chance of progressing in the competition.
Kingsley Coman’s strike in the second half proved to be the difference between the sides.
A win for FC Copenhagen against Galatasaray ensured that the Red Devils remained rock-bottom of Group A.
One win in six group games shows Man United’s return to the elite European competition was a massive failure.
Let’s get into some player ratings.
Player Ratings
Andre Onana – 6/10
The goalkeeper could not have done anything to stop Bayern’s goal. He showcased his long-range passing by creating two half-chances for Dalot and Hojlund.
Diogo Dalot – 6/10
The full-back was fine at the back and tried to support the attack.
Harry Maguire – 6/10
The England international looked rock-solid again but was unfortunate to come off injured just before the break. He deservingly got a great round of applause when substituted.
Raphael Varane – 5/10
It was great to see Varane back after warming the bench for a few weeks. He failed to track Coman’s presence behind him for the winger’s strike.
Luke Shaw – 6/10
A fine driving shot in the first half to test Manuel Neuer but was substituted at the break due to an injury.
Sofyan Amrabat – 5/10
The midfielder was again left alone to cover a lot of areas. Ten Hag used him as a make-shift centre-back in the last 10 minutes as Man United chased the game.
Scott McTominay – 3/10
No goal, no show.
Bruno Fernandes – 5/10
The United skipper started the encounter brightly but dropped deeper to accommodate McTominay behind Hojlund as the game went on.
He should have done better with his shot when Wan-Bissaka found him with perfection near the edge of the box.
Alejandro Garnacho – 5/10
With Rashford out of the squad, the onus was on Garnacho to shine. He tried to take on Bayern’s right-back but did not get much joy.
Antony – 5/10
The winger played with swagger early in the contest, but his influence faded as the game progressed.
Rasmus Hojlund – 3/10
Dayot Upamecano dominated the Danish striker. A night to forget for the starlet.
Substitutes
Jonny Evans – 6/10
The veteran came on for Harry Maguire and looked surprisingly comfortable against a lethal Bayern attack.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6/10
The right-back played a fine pull-back cross for Fernandes soon after his introduction.
Hannibal Mejbri– 4/10
The youngster looked bereft of creative ideas.
Facundo Pellistri – 5/10
The winger neither impressed nor was poor in his 15-minute cameo.
Kobbie Mainoo – 6/10
An assured cameo from the teenager. He must start against Liverpool.
