Man Utd’s pursuit of Diogo Costa could be set for ‘shake up’ as Chelsea enter race

Manchester United’s pursuit of goalkeeper Diogo Costa could be set for shake up amid fresh interest from Chelsea, according to Record (page 16).

The Red Devils are currently exploring the transfer market for a new shot-stopper amid the uncertain future of David de Gea.

Costa is one of the players that has been linked and Record claim that their ‘stagnant’ pursuit could be revived in the near future.

As per the publication, United previously valued the Porto star at €35 million (£30m) which is far less than his €75m (£64m) release clause.

It is added that Chelsea have now entered the race to sign Costa, and this could ‘shake up’ United and encourage them to hurry up.

United have big decision to make on Costa

The Red Devils have had scouts at the Estadio do Dragao for a number of months. They have been keeping a close eye on Costa.

Despite this, the club have yet to make a formal approach. The hierarchy could be waiting for the final outcome over De Gea’s contract.

De Gea has refused to accept a significant pay-cut on his £375,000-a-week salary, and he could walk out on a free transfer next month.

If that happens, United will need to invest big on another goalkeeper. Costa could be a possible candidate with his ideal age and experience.

At just 23, Costa is the number one for Portugal. He was superb for Porto last season with a pass accuracy of 77 per cent with 7.3 long balls per game.

The Portuguese was also brilliant between the sticks with a save percentage of 74. He kept out three successive penalties in the Champions League group stage.

Costa would undoubtedly be an upgrade on De Gea, who made four errors leading to goals last season.

The big question is whether United can pursue a quick transfer deal for Costa this month. Porto are desperate to balance their books by June 30.

They could sell him for less than his buy-out clause, but definitely not for £30m. United must make a bid soon or Chelsea could beat them to his signature.
