Manchester United will make a formal offer for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana in the next few hours, according to Italian publication La Repubblica.
The Red Devils are targeting a new shot-stopper in the current transfer window with David de Gea predicted to leave the club when his contract expires tomorrow.
Onana is their priority target to replace the Spaniard, and La Repubblica report that the Red Devils will present an offer for the 27-year-old in the ‘next few hours’.
It is added that the Cameroonian has already spoken with United through his representative, and there is a verbal agreement in place over a long-term contract.
Inter currently value their prized asset in the region of €60 million. They anticipate that the Red Devils will get close to the figure by including a series of bonuses.
United set to make formal approach for Onana
De Gea has been United’s mainstay in goal for the past 12 seasons, but the Spaniard could head for the exit door following the contract drama in recent weeks.
The 32-year-old initially agreed a contract extension with a drastic wage reduction, but United backtracked on the agreement to propose an even lower salary.
De Gea has no plans of accepting the latest offer on the table. As things stand, he could leave the club as a free-agent when his contract expires at the end of June.
In our view, United have been disrespectful towards the legendary keeper, but it could be the right time to part ways. The club need an upgrade between the sticks.
De Gea has been inconsistent with his goalkeeping over the past year. He managed 25 clean sheets last season, but made four errors directly leading to goals.
Meanwhile, he also looked vulnerable with his distribution from the back. The Spaniard was guilty of handing cheap possession to the opposition many times.
Onana would be a brilliant upgrade on De Gea next season. He is one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers and likes to make regular high claims in the box.
The Cameroonian is also very mobile and can operate as a sweeper-keeper. He should easily adapt to Ten Hag’s playing style, having played under him for four years at Ajax.
Hence, Onana is a no-brainer signing for the Red Devils, and they should secure his services as soon as possible such that he can be involved in the pre-season tour.
