Man Utd want to sign Harry Kane

Harry Kane

Manchester United are keen on landing the signature of Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane this summer, a report from The Athletic claims.

The Red Devils have held a long-term interest in the England international, and they were linked with him before the start of this campaign.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward made contact with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, but a deal was unlikely after the huge outlay on Jadon Sancho.

It is now reported that the Red Devils have revived their pursuit of Kane, who will enter the final two years of his Spurs contract in July.

The England star could be available for £100 million if he does not renew. United are aiming to sign Kane regardless of who becomes the permanent manager this summer.

Our view:

United have experienced an average campaign in the Premier League this term, and part of their concern has been their goalscoring.

They have squandered multiple scoring chances during the backend of the season, thus contributing to frustrating draws against mid-table sides.

Kane would offer an ideal solution for United, and could form a deadly strike partnership alongside Cristiano Ronaldo next season.

The England star started the current campaign on a very slow note, but has recaptured his form with 22 goals and six assists from 41 games.

There are no doubts over his scoring ability, but a potential concern could be his age. Kane will be 29 before the start of the 2022/23 season.

Some fans may question whether he would be an ideal signing for long-term success. He could have an impact similar to Robin van Persie, but the Dutchman dropped off after a superb debut campaign.

While Van Persie was signed on the cheap, the same won’t be the case with Kane, who will cost a joint British-record fee. United could be better off looking for a younger alternative in the transfer market.

They have been linked with Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, who could be available for a fee in the region of £63m. The 22-year-old has bagged a sublime tally of 26 goals from just 33 appearances this term.
