Jose Mourinho has already confirmed that Manchester United will be in the transfer market for a central midfielder or two over the summer, and we could also be looking to bring in a new pair of full-backs.
Ashley Young has fought off competition from Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo to be our left-back for the majority of this season. However, the England international isn’t a natural defender and does turn 33 over the summer.
Likewise, captain Antonio Valencia also turns 33 before the start of next season and we could be on the lookout for a new right-back as a result. However, we will have Timothy Fosu-Mensah back from his season-long loan at Crystal Palace before the start of next season.
The Times are reporting that we are hoping to persuade 17-year-old ‘wonderkid‘ Ryan Sessegnon to sign from Fulham. The England under-21 started the season as a left-back before being converted to a left winger by Slavisa Jokanovic. Sessegnon has gone on to score 15 goals and record six assists in 44 Championship appearances (43 starts) for the promotion-chasing Cottagers this season.
Ryan Sessegnon won the 2017-18 Championship Player of the Season – the youngest player in history to accomplish this, fighting off Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves and teammate Tom Cairney.
However, the Times reported back in January that Fulham will be looking for £50 million for the teenage sensation, which could be seen as a risk given his age, though he does have great potential and a lot of years ahead of him.
Jose Mourinho likes an attacking full-back in his side and Ryan Sessegnon is exactly that. He loves running at defenders and is a good goalscorer. However, he’s not been the best crosser of the ball in the second tier this season and his defending hasn’t been great. He has plenty of years to improve though. The Portuguese coach usually signs experienced players too so we’ll see how interested we really are in the player in the coming weeks I’m sure.
