Manchester United are very interested in signing Monaco defender Axel Disasi ahead of the summer transfer window, according to Foot Mercato.
The Red Devils currently have Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as the regular central defensive pairing under manager Erik ten Hag.
Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are the back-up options, but there is speculation that the former could head for the exit door this summer.
In that case, the club should invest on a possible upgrade and Foot Mercato claim that United have already spoken with Disasi’s entourage.
It is added that the Frenchman fits the profile of Ten Hag. The Red Devils boss is eyeing a solid centre-back, who is strong in one-on-one duels.
The club are yet to make any sort of contact with Monaco for the former Reims man, but it is reported that he could cost around €50 million.
Will United sign Axel Disasi this summer?
Disasi is one of the top central defenders in French football at the moment. He has had a fine campaign with Monaco in Ligue 1 this season.
The 25-year-old has won 84 per cent of his passes while making three clearances, 1.6 interceptions and one tackle. He has won 71% of his aerial duels.
Disasi has the right attributes to succeed in the Premier League with his strong physique and aerial presence, but we would prefer someone else.
Even if Maguire leaves, United have another solid deputy for Varane in Lindelof. United should instead focus on bolstering the left centre-back role.
In our view, the club should pursue another left-footed central defender to compete with Martinez.
A deal for Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol could be expensive with a €100m+ price tag. A cheaper and smart signing would be Goncalo Inacio from Sporting.
The Portuguese was brilliant in both legs of the Europa League round of 16 tie against Arsenal and could be prised away for around €35m this summer.
