Manchester United signed Wout Weghorst on loan in January, but the 30-year-old has scored just one goal in 11 games in all competitions, so the Red Devils are expected to sign a prolific centre-forward in the summer transfer window.
Tim Sherwood believes they should consider Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic as the 28-year-old has proven himself a consistent goalscorer in England and would be an upgrade on Weghorst.
He said on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast: “He’s a step up from him. If Weghorst can play for Man United, then so can Mitrovic.
“The manager wants a nine and I think they go for a big one in the summer. A standout number nine in Europe whoever that may be.”
Mitrovic joined Fulham from Newcastle United for £22 million in 2018 and has made 198 appearances in all competitions, scoring 107 goals with 22 assists.
The Serbian international has been outstanding in the last two years, netting 43 goals with seven assists in 44 Championship games last season and scoring 11 goals with two assists from 19 Premier League games this term, so he’s in the best form of his career.
With Anthony Martial being short of fitness and playing time, he’s unlikely to be a regular up front next season. Marcus Rashford is more effective out wide, so Eric ten Hag will need a natural centre-forward.
It’s little wonder Sherwood thinks Mitrovic could shine at Man United given his impressive return, but the Red Devils will likely have other names on their shortlist.
Fulham won’t want to sell their in-form talisman either. The Cottagers have tied him down until 2026 and could be in Europe next season, so Mitrovic has plenty to play for in west London.
