Man Utd to trigger defender’s £25m release clause

Manchester United are expected to be back in the market for another centre-back this summer.

Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof have established themselves as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice partnership in recent months but an upgrade will be required if we’re to challenge for the Premier League title next month.

Last summer we were linked to a number of centre-backs but Jose Mourinho and co failed to produce any results.

One of those was Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld, of which it was widely-reported he had a release clause in his contract that would be activated ahead of this summer’s transfer window. As per a contribution we made on Premier Soccer Chat, the capture of the Belgian centre-back would be a huge addition to our defence for next season.

The Sun are today reporting that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also interested in the Belgium international and that we’re willing to trigger Alderweireld’s £25 million release clause this summer.

Alderweireld has made over 150 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur after signing from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and is widely-considered one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, and therefore, world football.

However, the report does say that we are yet to meet with Tottenham officials regarding the move. Of course, if we’re going to match their buy-out cause then they’ll have no choice but to accept it anyway.
