Man Utd target will cost more than £71m

Bayer 04 Leverkusen have rejected an offer of €80 million (£71m) for Manchester United target Kai Havertz, according to reports in Germany.

Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid made the offer according to Bild (via AS).

The report states that Zinedine Zidane’s side were even prepared to let the player go back on loan for the 2020-21 season as part of the deal.

Havertz has been a key part of the side chasing Champions League football this season, scoring 11 goals in 26 Bundesliga matches this campaign – five of those have come in the four matches since the league restarted last month.

The 20-year-old also has five assists in the league, and three goals in three Europa League matches, splitting his time between the number 10 role, right wing and striker.

Kai Havertz has been on Manchester United’s radar for a while now and with Chelsea doing a deal in principle for Timo Werner on Thursday, we may want to step up in our pursuit of the German international as soon as possible.

However, it’s very interesting that Bayer Leverkusen have rejected Real Madrid’s £71 million offer, particularly if the report is accurate about sending Havertz back on loan to the Bay Arena for a season. The youngster is heading into the final two years of his contract and one must assume he’s not going to sign an extension to that.

If the Bundesliga side are adamant that they will not drop below their €100 million (£89m) asking price it will be interesting to see if Real Madrid or any other club are prepared to match their valuation.

AS reports:

“Real Madrid are continuing to push to get the services of Kai Havertz, one of the most sought-after pearls on the market, and have already made an offer for the 20-year-old German international.

‘The club came to offer 80 million euros to Bayer Leverkusen, a club at which Havertz has a contract until 2022, with the aim of letting him stay one more year [in Germany] to continue evolving and finally incorporating him in the summer of 2021 into Madrid’s ranks.

“Leverkusen have rejected that first offer for a player that they will not let go for less than a hundred million euros.”

Manchester United have spent big sums on Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes over the past two transfer windows so whether the board will be willing to fork out Bayer Leverkusen’s asking price for Kai Havertz this summer remains to be seen.
