The German Bundesliga season restarted on Saturday after a two-month suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Borussia Dortmund hammered rivals Schalke 04 4-0 in one of the afternoon games to move within a point of leaders Bayern Munich in a game that saw Manchester United target Jadon Sancho get a 12-minute run towards the end.
In the evening game, Borussia Monchengladbach were comfortable 3-1 winners away to Eintracht Frankfurt. The Foals were 2-0 up inside the opening six minutes. In fact, they opened the scoring in the first 60 seconds of the game at the Commerzbank Arena.
The player to open the scoring was forward Alassane Plea, with a fine finish across goal. The 27-year-old now has nine Bundesliga goals on the season from 21 starts, as well as a further seven assists. Plea was playing out on the right wing today but is often utilised as a striker in Marco Rose’s side.
According to Sky Germany (via the Metro) two days ago, Manchester United are interested in the Borussia Monchengladbach attacker. It seems an interesting choice given the form of Marcus Rashford this season, and Odion Ighalo’s performances since joining us on loan during the winter transfer window. Ighalo would be a cheap transfer target.
One would have to think if our interest is real, that it would be as an alternative option should we not sign our top targets, including Borussia Dortmund forward Sancho.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has three players who can play as striker – Rashford, Ighalo and Anthony Martial, meaning that we would surely not need Plea if we were to sign Ighalo on a permanent deal. Plea did show on Saturday evening that he is also capable of playing out on the right wing, which is predominately Sancho’s position at Dortmund.
