Manchester United have suffered a major injury blow ahead of the Premier League clash against Liverpool on the road this weekend.
The Red Devils are currently playing Bayern Munich in the final group stage game of the Champions League and they require a win to have any chance of making the round of 16.
Aside from a victory, the club need Galatasaray and Copenhagen to share the spoils. United will book their spot into the last 16 of the competition only if both of these come true.
Amidst this, they have suffered a major setback with Maguire suffering a groin injury. He tried to carry on for a minute or two and has now been replaced by Jonny Evans in central defence.
The news is a huge blow for the Red Devils for the game but also for the matches coming up. United have a difficult away trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday evening.
The prospect of Evans partnering Raphael Varane in central defence may not be a good sight against an in-form Reds attack. It remains to be seen whether Victor Lindelof will be available.
Lindelof picked up an undefined injury in the 2-1 league win over Chelsea and he missed the subsequent loss to Bournemouth. He has not made the matchday squad for tonight’s game.
In the pre-match press, manager Erik ten Hag said that he was doubtful and the fans will be hoping that the Swede will recover in time to face their arch-rivals at Anfield on Sunday.
United are currently sixth in the league table, six points behind the top four. They face a big test ahead with Liverpool, West Ham United and Aston Villa to face in quick succession.
