Manchester United have suffered a fresh injury blow with midfielder Scott McTominay out for a few weeks due to a hyperextension of his knee against Chelsea last week.
The Scotland international came on as a substitute in the dramatic 4-3 loss at Stamford Bridge. He hyperextended his knee during the closing stages of the game.
The discomfort due to the incident was the reason behind his absence against Liverpool on Sunday.
Insider United has now revealed that the Scot has not suffered a serious injury, but may require two to three weeks to recover depending on the rehabilitation progress.
The Red Devils have been unlucky with injuries for most of the season. They are currently without four senior centre-backs in Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans.
Martinez and Lindelof are sidelined for another month while manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he does not expect Varane or Evans to return within a short notice.
Furthermore, left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are also on the sidelines. Shaw is anticipated to return from his muscle injury before the end of the campaign.
United are currently well equipped in the midfield department with the likes of Casemiro and Mason Mount returning from their respective injuries in recent games.
However, McTominay’s absence is a definite blow. The midfielder has the knack of scoring crucial goals and could be a big miss if he is sidelined for the next three weeks.
McTominay has been defensively vulnerable from midfield at times, but he has contributed to United picking up 12 extra points in the Premier League this season.
We should get a clear update on McTominay and Marcus Rashford from the club later this week.
