Man Utd still yet to agree deal with Leicester for Maguire

Manchester United are still yet to agree a deal with Leicester City for centre-back Harry Maguire, the BBC understands.

This transfer saga has continued to go on over the summer and with just 10 days left of the summer transfer window we are still yet to land one of our priority targets.

Jose Mourinho and Ed Woodward failed to land a centre-back last summer, despite being strongly linked with Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and others. United fans are hoping the same doesn’t happen again this season.

What’s more, we start our 2019-20 Premier League campaign at home to Chelsea on Sunday 11 August – it would be great if Maguire could get some training sessions in with his United teammates several days before. That is, if indeed we do sign the England international.

It was reported earlier in the summer that we made an offer of £70 million for the 26-year-old, but that the Foxes were looking for a deal closer to £85 million.

Maguire only signed a new five-year deal at the King Power Stadium last September, so all the power is with Leicester City. Therefore, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward needs to pull his finger out and match what the East Midlands club want.

We cannot afford to miss out on a centre-back this summer. Last season we conceded a club high 54 goals in a single Premier League season. With Eric Bailly set to start the new season injured once again, and with neither Chris Smalling nor Phil Jones good enough to be a regular for a side aiming for top four, the signing of Harry Maguire would easily be an upgrade on what we currently have.

Having finished sixth last campaign, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has so far only added Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James to our squad, whilst we have lost influential central midfielder Ander Herrera. New signings are needed in these final 10 days if we’re to compete for a top four finish this season…
