Manchester United are stepping up their interest in signing Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund ahead of the summer transfer window, according to Mirror.
The Red Devils are expected to invest on a new striker, and Harry Kane has been widely reported as the number one target for manager Erik ten Hag.
However, a transfer looks unlikely at the moment. Spurs are reluctant to negotiate his sale to a Premier League club and may give preference to Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, there is a possibility that Kane could see out the final year of his contract at the London club.
Amidst this, the Red Devils have turned their focus to signing £40m-rated Hojlund from Atalanta.
The Denmark international is quickly emerging as the ‘leading candidate’ to become United’s next striker.
Hojlund would be a superb long-term signing
Hojlund had an impressive 2022/23 campaign at club level with 16 goals and seven assists.
Out of those, 10 goals and four assists came in the Atalanta shirt. The Dane joined the Serie A outfit from Sturm Graz before the transfer deadline last summer.
The 20-year-old has yet to become a consistent goalscorer, but his playing style has been likened to Erling Haaland, which is a big compliment to him.
Hojlund is a left-footed striker with an aerial presence similar to Haaland. He likes to win regular duels and also possesses good pace on the counter-attack.
The youngster is also blessed with good vision in the box. In the last international break, he scored five goals in just two Euro 2024 qualifiers for Denmark.
With the right guidance, he could develop into a potent goalscorer in a couple of seasons, and Ten Hag could be the right manager to get the best out of him.
