Ruben Amorim will make his managerial debut for Manchester United during Sunday’s Premier League clash at Ipswich Town.
The Portuguese tactician has spoken fondly about multiple United stars in the lead-up and has now praised midfielder Mason Mount.
The England international has had a tough start to his Red Devils career due to injuries, playing just 980 regular minutes since last season.
Mount returned to training after a muscle injury prior to the international break. He is expected to play a key role under Amorim in a new-look formation.
Amorim likes to operate with a 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 system, and Mount is well versed in playing in the set-up from his early career at Chelsea.
Speaking to the club’s media, Amorim said that he is looking forward to getting the best out of Mount.
He said (via Manutd.com): “Mason Mount – I have to tell you I love that kid. You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.
“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.
“He played in this system [before], so it’s perfect for him. I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy.”
Mount has played as a central midfielder since his move to United, but he was predominantly an attacking midfielder during his time at Chelsea.
It is quite clear that he is most comfortable higher up the pitch, and he could get the opportunity to shine alongside Bruno Fernandes in the final third.
Amorim prefers to play with two inverted forwards behind the main striker. Mount looks a strong candidate to partner the Red Devils captain.
As the manager hinted, the £29 million-rated star could also operate in central midfield. Mount needs to stay unscathed and repay Amorim’s faith.
